Spokane is located along the eastern border of Washington
State in the heart of the Inland Northwest. The largest city
between Seattle and Minneapolis on the I-90 corridor, Spokane
is 18 miles west of the Idaho border and 110 miles south
of the Canadian border.
As the county seat, Spokane serves as a hub for business,
retail and financial services, and is the major healthcare
provider to a 36-county region encompassing parts of Montana,
Oregon, Idaho, Alberta,
British Columbia and Washington. Spokane is part of the Inland
Northwest region that extends across 80,000 square miles
and is home to over three million residents who live, work
and enjoy this recreational
paradise. The topography of the Inland Northwest varies
from rolling wheat fields to snow-capped
mountains, from lush forests to deserts, and from pristine
lakes to raging rivers.
Spokane is a four-season city with each season contributing
to the region’s unique lifestyle.
Summer weather is ideal for enjoying numerous mountain, river
and lake recreations and the many
mountainous winter sport areas receive a great deal of snow;
sometimes enjoying a five to six-month
season.
While Spokane and the surrounding region are a haven for
outdoorsmen, the arts and cultural activities are equally
popular here. The city maintains its own symphony orchestra
and jazz orchestra, is a regular stop for touring Broadway
shows and major concert tours and offers a host of destinations
for theatrical productions, live music and dozens of art
galleries and museums.
Spokane is steeped in family traditions and community activities
and regularly entertains a plethora of annual fairs, festivals
and special events. A physically active community,
Spokane’s most widely popular events include Bloomsday, the
second largest foot-race in the world, and Hoopfest, the
largest three-on-three basketball tournament in the world.
Education plays a vital role in Spokane. The city’s
public and private, primary and secondary schools produce
students who are consistently ranked in the upper range of
national scholastic ratings. Four universities and
two community colleges offer graduate and undergraduate degrees
as well as continuing education classes.
